Playtest Release - v0.75
Planar Allies is released in beta form as a playtest document. The current version of the rules is playable and could be used for a complete game. It is somewhat more complicated than Knave.
Feedback on the document and rules is welcome, but I'd love to just know that someone has played it.
Additional work includes revisions to the rules and text editing, but most of the work will be additional tables and descriptions to aid in running a plane-hoping experience. The current art is public domain work and will be replaced and expanded if I ever get around to it. That will be a long process if so, and I have We Will Mourn to work on as well.
My reason for creating this game, besides getting a fantasy heartbreaker out of my system, is that I am not satisifed with any of the existing old school rulesets. B/X is still too complicated. Knave is too simple. Black Hack is too fiddly. I love the Planescape setting and wanted to avoid getting mired in D&D's complexities. I ran a six month campaign with Knave, but it lacked some features. Thus Planar Allies was born.
Originally the game was called Outlanders, but I want to avoid confusion with the popular property. I considered Ringrunner, but there's a video game with that title.
